Investigators believe human remains found at a Cockeysville recycling plant Monday are “medical waste,” Baltimore County Police said Friday.

Officers arrived Monday morning at the Baltimore County Refuse/Recycling Center on Warren Road in response to the discovery of “possible human remains” inside the plant.

Items from multiple jurisdictions are sorted at the facility, which closed early Monday after the discovery. County spokesperson Erica Palmisano said the facility re-opened Tuesday.

“While the Baltimore County Police Department awaits autopsy results, investigators believe that this is an incident of improperly discarded medical waste,” the police department said in a news release Friday.

The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner is conducting an autopsy. Earlier this week, police said detectives were investigating where the “possible remains” had come from and whether a crime had occurred.
